Toilet Won’t Stop Running? Here’s What to Do Before Calling a Plumber

A person uses a wrench to fix a leaking toilet, with water visibly dripping near the base of the open toilet seat.

Is your toilet constantly running? Learn simple DIY steps to fix a running toilet — and when to call a plumber. Serving Indianapolis and surrounding areas.

A running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons of water a day and drive up your water bill fast. The good news? It’s often a simple fix. If your toilet won’t stop running, here’s what you can do to troubleshoot the issue before calling a plumber.

Step 1: Check the Flapper

The most common cause of a running toilet is a worn-out or misaligned flapper.

  • Lift the tank lid and flush the toilet.
  • Watch to see if the flapper (the rubber piece at the bottom of the tank) seals properly after the flush.
  • If it doesn’t seal or looks warped, it likely needs to be replaced — a quick and inexpensive fix.

Step 2: Inspect the Chain

Sometimes the chain that connects the flapper to the flush handle is too short or tangled, preventing the flapper from closing.

  • Adjust the length so it has just a bit of slack.
  • Make sure it’s not getting caught under the flapper.

Step 3: Adjust the Float

If the water level in the tank is too high, water can spill into the overflow tube and cause the toilet to run.

  • Look for the float (either a ball or a cup-style).
  • Gently lower the float to reduce the water level — there’s usually a screw or clip to help with this.

Step 4: Look for Fill Valve Issues

If the flapper and float seem fine, the fill valve may be the problem.

  • Listen for a hissing sound — that can signal a faulty valve.
  • These parts are replaceable with a basic toilet repair kit from a hardware store.
